Spicy Braised Konnyaku (Konjac or Konjaku)

  1. Remove konnyaku from package
  2. Rinse under cold running water
  3. Cut konnyaku into 2 cm cubes
  4. Boil briefly to remove any bitterness (called “aku” in Japanese)
  5. Remove from heat and drain
  6. Heat a little sesame oil in a frying pan
  7. Add the konnyaku and lightly stir fry
  8. Add some thinly sliced dried chili peppers, soy sauce, and mirin
  9. Stir-fry for about 3-5 minutes
  10. Top with some toasted sesame seeds

It takes a while for the flavor to sink in to the konnyaku, so it often tastes better after letting it rest for awhile or serving it the next day (store it in a covered container in the refrigerator).
